carboNZero certified

"To help ensure a healthy environment for current and future generations"

As part of our ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility, Bridgestone New Zealand Limited was recently awarded the internationally recognised carboNZeroCertTM certification. This certification represents a substantial amount of effort, both by Bridgestone and the carboNZero programme staff to ensure our operations adhere to the rigorous standards required.

The carboNZero programme was established in 2001 by Landcare Research New Zealand Limited, one of New Zealand’s leading Crown Research Institutes. The programme is based on over a decade of research on climate change, greenhouse gas measurement and carbon monitoring.  carboNZero certification is aligned with international best practice (ISO 14064-1, PAS 2050 and ISO 14067) and requires businesses to scientifically measure their carbon footprint and develop a business wide plan for systematic reduction.

Step 1: Measurement

All direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions associated with our business activities were measured, including general operations, retail, commercial, factories, warehouses, and our National Support Office. The major contributors to these emissions were, waste to landfill and diesel, followed by petrol and electricity.

Step 2: Manage

As part of this program, we have made a sustained commitment to manage and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions wherever possible. To this end, we are actively pursuing a number of environmental initiatives including:

• Investigating alternative tyre disposal options to reduce the end-of-life waste impact.

• Reviewing waste to landfill and recycling options for all locations.

• Changing from LPG to electric forklifts.

• Reviewing the vehicle fleet composition and replacing with more fuel efficient vehicles where   possible.

• Enhancing truck fleet logistics efficiencies (GPS route management).

• Reducing paper consumption.

• Participating in a forest restoration projects.

• Utilising technology to reduce travel.

Step 3: Mitigate

We purchase carbon credits in New Zealand and offshore to offset any remaining, unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions for Bridgestone New Zealand Limited and our fully owned subsidiaries.
