Our environmental commitment

In line with the Bridgestone mission, our objective is to provide a safe environment for all our children and the children of future generations. That’s why we believe in doing everything we can to minimise our impact on the environment. A key component of this approach is our commitment to a policy of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. It’s a philosophy we practice every day across our global operations.

Reduce | Production

Bridgestone’s environmental management activities are organised on a global basis using systems that conform to the ISO14001 environmental standard. We measure our energy use and emissions and work to minimise these through our internal procedures. In addition, wherever possible, we use recycled resources - such as waste water or end-of-life tyres - in generating the energy required to power our manufacturing processes.

Reduce | Fuel Use

Through our ongoing development we aim to minimise our impact on the environment. This includes the design of tyres themselves. Our tyre technologies lower noise pollution, extend the life of tyres and reduce fuel consumption through lowering the rolling resistance. We are also taking this market leadership to the next level with global education programs such as Make Cars Green.

Reduce | Raw Materials

Our manufacturing processes use a mix of synthetic and natural renewable resources to produce tyres that deliver performance, durability and safety and we’re constantly striving toward more environmentally-friendly production.

Reuse | Retread

Just because a tyre’s tread has lost its grip doesn’t mean it has finished its useful life. We manufacture truck retread tyres to strict guidelines that deliver safety, economy and performance. More importantly, every time we make a truck retread, we’re reusing up to two thirds of a tyre – and we can do it more than once.

Bridgestone Bandag’s retreading process minimises the environmental impact on our planet. Compared to new tyres, retread tyres require only 32% of the petroleum resources for production. Using retreads also leads to reductions in CO2 emissions in the production process and reduces the amount of industrial wastes.

Recycle | Waste to Energy

Rubber has energy, even when it’s finished its useful life as a Bridgestone tyre. That’s why, wherever we can, many of our waste tyres are converted to energy in power plants and cement kilns across the world.

Recycle | Products

Rubber is a valuable and flexible resource, even after it’s covered hundreds of thousands of kilometres. Millions of Bridgestone tyres are eventually recycled into rubber products, including; construction materials, flooring, road surfaces, blankets and other consumer products, and rubber scrap.

What you can do to help.

So we’re telling you how we are reducing our impact on the environment during production, how we are reusing our products wherever possible and how recycling is further extending the useful life of the tyres we make. Now, here’s where you come in. After all, you get to choose what tyres you put on your vehicle - and how you look after them can also make a difference.

Low Rolling Resistance technology

Rolling resistance is an important factor in determining fuel economy and CO2 emissions. Put simply, it’s the force required to roll a tyre. Less resistance means less fuel is required to power the vehicle, resulting in fewer CO2 emissions being released into the environment.

That’s why we’ve developed tyres with Low Rolling Resistance Technology. Click here to learn more about these tyres.

Make cars green

As a world leader in tyre technology, we believe it’s our responsibility to help educate motorists in the care of their tyres to optimise safety, performance, longevity – and their environmental performance.

That’s why we have teamed up with the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) to help drive Make Cars Green, which is an international campaign aimed at reducing the impact of motoring on our planet.

One of the many initiatives is a list of 10 common sense ideas to help you on your way to greener motoring. Click here to learn more.
